28th St Station

I was in L.A. last week visiting family and friends and I finally broke down and bought the Hipstamatic app on my iPhone. Definitely worth the $1.99 I shelled out.

A couple more from my last shoot at P.S. 76…

I decided to start photographing the area around P.S. 76 after getting a closer look at this industrial neighborhood of New York. Packed with auto shops, abandoned storefronts, and public housing, the area has an interesting mix of businesses and residential spaces juxtaposed and jumbled together. Since I just bought a Polaroid Colorpack II for a cool $10, I decided to test it out on my walk back to the F train.

Recently I’ve been doing some shooting for Studio In A School, an organization that brings teaching artists into New York City public schools. I’ve been documenting the work of one of their teaching artists in a first grade class at P.S. 76 in Queens near Astoria.

Clearly, these kids are some of the cutest around—and they also happen to be a very talented group! It was great to be able to watch them work on several art projects, including self-portraits made out of construction paper. Asked to highlight their distinct facial features, I was impressed with the ability of these kids to capture themselves in such an inventive and creative way. I love the abstract representations of the faces and the geometric shapes of the individual features. I’m looking forward to seeing what they make next!

I’ve been photographing my 92 year old grandmother on and off for the last 6 years. Given her advanced age, she is often confined to bed as a result of illness or a related cause. This image is from a bad fall she had several months back where she collapsed on the street and badly bruised her face, arms and legs. Luckily she didn’t break anything—a minor miracle!

night shooting in crown heights.

Nitu and I were biking through Sunset Park several months back on our way to eat some tacos and we stopped at a gas station to put some air in her tires. This adorable man in a turban was sitting outside the gas station office, enjoying the stillness of the late afternoon and smiling to himself.

In honor of Nitu’s birthday, we had an afternoon picnic in Prospect Park, complete with cider donuts, kale salad, scrabble, and of course croquet.

People were out flying kites and trying on fake mustaches…I know, I know, Brooklyn is such a cliche. I even spotted a small child playing with a fake wooden rifle.
